My First Date

It’s a full moon day and the time is 9pm. I am having a candle light dinner with Kavya at the beach.
“Karthik, the moon looks beautiful today. Don’t you think so?” Kavya said.
“I thought the same until I saw you. But now the moon comes no where close to you.”
I could see her blushing. I scored a hundred points for this, I thought.
“It’s a romantic evening. There is an air of romance everywhere. Isn’t it?” I said
“Ya, why don’t you sing a song to make it even more musical and romantic.”
I started “Ek Do teen….” She stopped me instantly…..” Karthik, what is this masala song…sing something soft….something related to both of us…something….” I Cut her in the middle and said “I understood now. Here I go….You and I, in this beautiful world”
You are singing the Hutch song….So you think I am the dog following you where ever you go….You stupid….Thaddddddddd……I fell down from my bed…..i looked at the watch….its the same old dream again…….

2 days back I got engaged with Kavya. We were sitting on the stage facing the guests, smiling at every person who passed by. I was waiting for the right moment to make the first move. With all my courage I asked her
Me: Do you have a cell?
Kavya: ya
Me: Does it have a number too?
Kavya: Ya ( she smiles)
Me: then she can give the number right…should I ask it explicitly (Instead of telling it to myself, by mistake I told it loudly)
Kavya gave her number (She Smiles yet again)

Me: Why don’t we go out tomorrow? (Actually only air and no voice was coming out of my mouth)
She understood my frustration, desperation and perspiration. She said “Will let you know after taking permission from my mom, dad, cousins, neighbors and friends.
Me: Yaaa, You needn’t say YES or NO now. You can say ‘YES’ tomorrow morning.

I called her next day at 12 noon. She didn’t pick the call. After half an hour my dad called me and said “Your father in law called me. He was asking if all of us can go and watch Shivaji movie tonight.” Now I understood that, in my father in law’s opinion, on a Date it’s not just the couple but the entire family goes” So all of us went on a DATE happppillyyy.

When we went to the theater they were 15 people from Kavya’s side waiting for us. I said “Hi Kavya”. All her cousins started teasing “Hiiiiiii Karthikkkk. Will you not talk to us? Will you talk only to Kavya?” Everyone burst into laughter except me.

I said to myself enough is enough. I have to think of a strategy, I had my plans ready. We went into the theater. I was walking just behind her. As soon as she sat, I sat next to her. I was proud of myself and patted my back. I still remember the seat no’s. She was sitting on 20 and myself on 21. Then my father in law said that our seats are from 1 to 20. She was sitting on 20 and I had to sit on seat 1 with the rest of them sitting in between us.

After reaching home I got a call from her. She said “will you take me out tomorrow??”
I couldn’t believe it. I said “ Whatt!!!!!!????????!!!!”
“Pick me up at 2 PM. We’ll go out for a movie”

I pulled out the movie, 50 first dates DVD from my shelf, which I bought couple of days before. I watched the movie 50 times, I was preparing notes and building strategies for my DATE, the whole night.

For the date at 2 PM, I woke up at 5 in the morning. I haven’t woke up so early in the past 5 years. I wanted to wear a special dress which can easily attract her. I wore Light green trousers, dark yellow sleeveless shirt, red color tie and red color goggles.

I knocked the door. I am sure Kavya will be impressed as soon as she sees me. Anu, her cousin, who is 7 years old opened the door. She started shouting “thief, thief”. My mother in law saw me and told “Anu, he is Karthik”. Then, addressing me, she said “Sorry Karthik. Anu is a kid. She doesn’t know that looks are deceptive.”
Was it sarcasm or a compliment? Is she trying to say that I look like a thief but I am not??? Anyways, I didn’t want to strain my brain when I didn’t have one.

I sat on the sofa in the hall. Kavya was still busy troubling her makeup kit and the poor mirror in her bedroom. In the mean while, I wanted to impress her mom and Anu.
"What are you doing Anu?” I asked.
“I’m feeling bored” she replied.
My mother in law immediately said “Anu, why don’t you go along with them?” (Oh god!!!! what is this twist?)
Anu replied “No. I don’t want to go” ( I had a sigh of relief…)

Mother-in-law: “But you wanted to go right? Look, even Karthik is also asking you to come with them…he’ll feel bad if you don’t go. Right Karthik? ( When did I ask her to come….Noooooo..Nooooooo….I didn’t ask her to come…..Now neither can I say yes nor can I say No….. I was trapped completely)

Kavya came out at the right time as my savior. I wanted to grab her hand, jump from the 2nd floor balcony on to my Pulsar and escape from there. But neither did I have a parachute nor a life insurance.

Finally, we were in the theater. With a great sense of pride, I sat in the seat next to hers, as if I was sitting on the throne to rule the world. I congratulated myself for this achievement. Then, I closed my eyes to thank god for his Minor contribution in this success. (I know I am being modest and humble.) Suddenly, somebody was shaking me…… I thought It was definitely god……he might have been angry for not recognizing his contribution ;-) ….. I opened my eyes, very reluctantly…..Kavya asked me “Were you sleeping? “

“No. I was just relaxing until the movie starts”
“ Ok!!! Let’s go”
“You don’t want to watch the movie????”
“The movie is already over. All the while you were sleeping and snoring. I mean Relaxing!!!” (She giggled)

Yesterday, I was doing nothing else, other than planning….
Today, here I am, sitting next to her and sleeping.

I told her that I was awake the whole night preparing for the DATE. She started laughing but she was impressed. We went to the Park Hotel, Beach side restaurant.
